My Story

Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiché, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two-hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major corps. The Quiché Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiché - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

Hello, my name is Manuel Angel Ajqui Toj. I was born on December 8, 2013 in Zacualpa, Quiche, and I am 10 years old. I am a healthy boy. I am in 2^nd grade this year at school. I enjoy playing with balls. My favorite color is red, and I love rabbits. My favorite foods are sausages with tomato sauce. I have one brother and three sisters and one of my sisters is part of the Feeding Program. I walk to the program in thirty minutes.  As a family, we attend the Catholic Church. I am under the care of my parents.

My father’s name is Jose Ajqui Tzoy.  He earns a living by working as a farmer. My mother’s name is Maria Toj Garcia, and she is a housewife. Moreover, she raises chickens to sell and get some income. We live in our maternal grandmother´s house. It has three rooms and one separated kitchen. Our house is made of adobe, tiles roof and dirt floors. We have running water. We do not have electricity, so we use lanterns to illuminate the house at night. We have cows, pigs, sheep and hens as domestic animals. We would like to have some chickens at home. Our current needs are groceries.
