My Story

Pasojoc III, where your child lives, is located in an extremely remote area of the mountains in Quiche, Guatemala.  Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is a 3-hour walk to the nearest market town.  The people who inhabit the area are Quiche Mayans who can trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization.  They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche; however, Spanish is becoming more common.  The climate is basically warm, but it can get very cold at night.  Houses in this area are typically constructed of adobe with tin sheet or tile roofs and dirt floors.  Pasojoc III is an area rich with natural resources.  It is a farming area where the inhabitants grow staples such as corn, beans, and other types of vegetables.  Many families also raise domestic animals such as sheep, goats, cows, and chickens.

Hello, my name is Sonia Aracely Calachij Cortez. I was born on January 24, 2017, and I am 6 years old. I am a healthy girl. I am in kindergarten at school this year. My favorite color is pink. I love rabbits.  My favorite food is rice.  I have one brother and two sisters. My sister is part of the Feeding Program. We walk for twenty minutes to attend the Program. I like to play with dolls in my spare time. As a family, we are attending the Prince of Peace Church. I am under the care of my paternal grandparents. My father’s name is Rolando Calachij Morales. He earns a living by discharging vegetable packages from a warehouse in Guatemala City. He comes to visit us every 2 or 3 months, and he contributes to us financially. My mother’s name was Viviana Sarai Cortez Mulul. Unfortunately, she passed away 5 years ago when she gave birth to my brother and he died too. My grandfather`s name is Emilio Calachij.  He works as a farmer and my grandmother`s name is Jacinta Morales.  She takes care of us and raises her domestic animals. I ask for your prayers for her because sometimes she suffers from headaches. Unfortunately, she has not visited the doctor, but she is taking natural medicines. We live in our paternal grandparent`s house. It has three rooms and one separated kitchen. The house is made of adobe, tin sheet roof, and dirt floors.  We have electricity and running water.  My parents pay for the electricity service every month.  We have pigs and hens at home, but we would like to have some chickens. As a humble family, our needs are groceries, corn, and clothes. This is my personal information, and I hope you find it interesting. I want to let you know that my grandmother gave this information to the LW evangelism team.  God bless you and protect you everywhere you are!

Kisses and hugs,

Sonia Aracely Calachij Cortez
