My Story

Pasojoc III, where your child lives, is located in an extremely remote area of the mountains in Quiche, Guatemala.  Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is a 3-hour walk to the nearest market town.  The people who inhabit the area are Quiche Mayans who can trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization.  They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche; however, Spanish is becoming more common.  The climate is basically warm, but it can get very cold at night.  Houses in this area are typically constructed of adobe with tin sheet or tile roofs and dirt floors.  Pasojoc III is an area rich with natural resources.  It is a farming area where the inhabitants grow staples such as corn, beans and other types of vegetables.  Many families also raise domestic animals such as sheep, goats, cows and chickens.

Hello, my name is Maria de la Cruz Calachij. I was born on February 26, 2014 in Zacualpa, Quiche, and I am 9 years old. I am a healthy girl. I am not enrolled at school this year because I do not want to go, but I help my mother with chores at home and I play hide and seek with my sister. My favorite color is purple, and I love cows. My favorite food is fried chicken. I have four brothers and three sisters. One of them is part of the Feeding program, and we walk to the program in twenty minutes.  As a family, we are attending the Prince of Peace Church. I am under the care of my parents. My father’s name is Encarnacion de la Cruz Mucia. He works as a farmer. Moreover, he travels to the coast to pick coffee beans for two months in order to help with home expenses. Three of my older brothers are contributing financially every week to the family.  My mother’s name is Nazaria Calachij Rodriguez, and she is a housewife and takes care of the family. In addition, she raises some hens and turkeys at home. I want to ask for your prayers for her because she has problems with her right foot. She fell down some time ago and was injured, and now she cannot walk well. Unfortunately, she is not under medical treatment. We live in our own house. It has three rooms and one separated kitchen. Our house is made of adobe, tin sheet roof, and dirt floors. We have running water and electricity. My father pays the service monthly. As a humble family, our needs are groceries and corn.  We would like to have some chickens. This is my personal information, and I hope you find it interesting.
